The Election Commission on Tuesday appointed Sanjay Verma, a 1990-batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police of Maharashtra. He replaced former DGP of Maharashtra Rashmi Shukla who was transferred over phone-tapping claims on Monday (November 4). The poll body has instructed the state government to comply with its order by 5 pm today.
Verma, serving as Director General of Legal and Technical, succeeds Rashmi Shukla, after the Election Commission ordered that she be removed as the state police chief following complaints by the Congress.
Following the poll body’s transfer order to Shukla, the chief secretary of the state was directed to send a panel of three IPS officers for appointment of the new DGP of Maharashtra by November 5.
Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole had written to Rajiv Kumar on October 31, requesting him to remove Rashmi Shukla from her position and had accused her of displaying a “clear bias” against opposition parties in the state, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP), news agency ANI had reported.
Sanjay Verma is set to retire in April 2028.
